Film Makers Comments Owl Productions Presents: A Documentary Film About Birth Matters: 'The Psychology of Birth; Invitation To Intimacy' A film by Elmer Postle Co-originated and Produced with Debby Takikawa 53 Min. (PAL Digibeta)
This film is about how an acknowledgment of the 'psychological presence' of the infant in the time prior to, during and after birth, the most sensitive and impressionable times of our lives, can lead us into finding out more about ourselves and becoming more present for our children. It follows the story of a woman who lost her mother at birth as she connects her inability to form functioning relationships with the fact her loss was never acknowledged. A boy of one year relates in family therapy how his 'C' section birth leads him to seriously bash his head as part of a story which has until now been seen as 'irrelevant silliness'. A single, first time mother in Los Angeles gives birth into a supportive environment. We see how the journey to birth can imprint messages about life which may last a lifetime. 'I enthusiastically endorse the film made by Elmer Postle on the psychology of birth. It is an interesting film and introduces in a dynamic way the key concept of the autonomy, sensitivity and intensity of the new baby. It is recommended viewing for all parents to be, as well as health care professionals involved with birth'. YEHUDI GORDON CONSULTANT GYNAECOLOGIST Author of 'Birth and Beyond' (2002) and 'The Encyclopedia of Pregnancy and Birth' (1992, with Janet Balaskas). We used to think that consciousness started at the age of three, babies were treated as though it didn’t matter what you did to them. Now science and therapeutic research is revealing that what happens to the infant at the start of life really matters. How do we begin to explore this collectively sensitive area? The film proposes that coming to terms with our own births allows us to choose what we do with and about birth in ways we never thought possible before. Leading experts, Doctors and PhD's at the top of their field of Birth Psychology share their insights about this pivotal developmental period in an original and moving story. Our contributors include: Joseph Chilton Pearce, Marti Glenn PhD, Raymond Castellino, Barbara Findeisen PhD, David Chamberlain PhD and from the Dagara people of West Africa, Sobonfu Some. The film is narrated by Binnie A. Dansby. |
